Triathlon FAQs

  • Ashville Sports Centre, Yew Tree Lane, Harrogate HG2 9JP

  • Arrive at least one hour before your start time. This will give you enough time to register, set up your bike and gear in transition, change, and be poolside 10 minutes before your start time. If you miss any of these steps, you may not be able to race.

Here is a suggested schedule for your arrival on race day:

    ● 60 minutes before start time: Arrive at the race venue and

    register.

    ● 45 minutes before start time: Set up your bike and gear in

    transition.

    ● 30 minutes before start time: Change into your swim gear.

    ● 10 minutes before start time: Be poolside.

Please note that these are just suggestions, and you may need more or less time depending on your individual needs. It is always better to arrive early than to risk being late.

  • FREE parking is available 300m from Ashville college at Rossett School, Green Lane, Harrogate, HG2 9JP

From the carpark, you can turn right and walk over to Ashville College on the opposite side of the road to the carpark. Our volunteers will be on hand to point you in the right direction.

  • Good question! Our race is permitted by British Triathlon, each of our races will follow British Triathlon competition rules. One important point, our event is a non drafting “draft illegal” race.

You can review the competition rules here in full

After entry and before the race, you’ll receive a full race brief that breaks down the rules for you to be aware of. On race day our officials and volunteers will be on hand to help with any questions.

  • You don't need to go out and buy a bunch of specialised gear for your first triathlon. You can get away with wearing a swimsuit, a T-shirt, and shorts for the swim, bike, and run. However, if you want to be more comfortable and efficient, you can invest in a tri suit or tri shorts. These garments are designed to be worn for all three stages of the race, and they will help to keep you cool, dry, and chafe-free.

You will also need a pair of goggles for the swim, on the day of the race we will provide a swim cap. On the bike and run, you will need to display your race number. A race belt is a great way to do this.

Here is a checklist of the essential gear you will need for your first triathlon:

    ● Swimsuit

    ● T-shirt

    ● Shorts

    ● Goggles

    ● Swim cap

    ● Race belt

    ● Running shoes

    ● Bike helmet

You can also add other items to your gear list as needed, such as sunglasses, a hat, a towel, or a change of clothes. But this is the bare minimum you will need to get started.

  • Any bike that works is welcome at our triathlon! We’ve had people compete on everything from shopping bikes with baskets to mountain bikes to high-end road bikes. Just make sure your bike is in good working order, with well-functioning gears and brakes. The course is hilly, so you’ll need to be able to climb efficiently.

A TT bike is not ideal for this course, so a regular road bike is preferable.

Helmets are mandatory for all participants. The route is not on closed roads, but it is very quiet. You’re unlikely to see many cars, but you must still obey all road rules. Crossing the white lines onto the opposite carriageway will result in anautomatic disqualification. Please also ensure that your bike has bar-end plugs.

We hope to see you at the race!

  • Our race operates a non refundable race entry. When all places are sold or if there is less than 4 weeks before race day, you may defer your entry to the following year.

  • We need to know your swimming speed so you can be placed in a lane with people of a similar speed. If you’re not sure, it’s better to underestimate your speed. You can go to a local 25-metre pool and time yourself swimming four lengths at a comfortable pace. This will give you your 100-metre time. Then multiply that time by 4. You can change your time after registering until about a month before the event if you’re still not sure.

  • Not at all. Many people swim breaststroke. However, for safety reasons, you won’t be allowed to swim backstroke with many people using the same lanes.

A full race brief will be given on the day and our poolside team will be on hand to help.

  • Yes, you can. Tumble turns are permitted.
